Two years after Adam Lambert kissed a boy and ABC executives didn't like it, during his notorious and now-legendary show-closing performance at the 2009 American Music Awards, the "American Idol" rabble-rouser returned to the show as an AMAs presenter this Sunday, effectively ending the network's unofficial Lambert ban and bringing the controversy-baiting Idol's crazy career full circle. "Has it been two years already? Wow, time flies," he quipped, as he took the stage wearing a natty suit and a knowing smile.


Honestly, this year's AMAs show was so dull, and so light on true watercooler moments, I bet producers were secretly hoping Adam would do something jaw-dropping, something "outrageous," just to generate some sort of buzz and spice things up. Unfortunately, Adam didn't perform, he just introduced OneRepublic (a band featuring his frequent collaborator Ryan Tedder)...but still, it was all very exciting.

Adam Lambert Reveals Title to New Album, Single

It all went down on Twitter: Trespassing is the name of the full-length (a song of the same name, which Lambert worked on withPharrell Williams, is also on the album) and the first single, co-written by Dr. Luke (Britney Spears, Ke$ha, Kelly Clarkson) with Claude Kelly (Bruno Mars’ “Grenade,”Jessie J’s “Price Tag”), Ammo (Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”) and Cirkut (Rihanna’s “You Da One”), is called “Better Than I Know Myself.”

Minutes after posting the tweet to his 1.2 million followers, the hash tag #BETTERTHANIKNOWMYSELF was trending on the social media site.

Other writers and musicians who worked on the album include songwriters Ryan Tedder and Evan Bogart and Chic founder and veteran producer Nile Rodgers, although it has yet to be revealed which songs made the final track listing.     

As for a release date, Lambert announced only that it would be “dropping” in 2012. Back in September, RCA Records CEO Peter Edge and president Tom Corson told the Hollywood Reporter that the album would be out in the first quarter, which ends March 30.

No doubt the label will want the promotional cycle to coincide with season 11 of American Idol so that Lambert can make another appearance on the show -- he’s been back three times since finishing second on season 8: as a mentor and performer on season 9 (he sang “Whataya Want From Me” during Top 9) and again in season 10, when he performed “Aftermath” during the Top 13.

On Friday, THR reported that Lambert will be a presenter on Sunday’s American Music Awards, marking his return to the stage where he ignited much controversy two years earlier with a mid-performance, same-sex kiss.

Two years after sparking a wave of controversy with a same-sex mid-performance kiss, the "American Idol" runner-up will be back on the ABC show’s stage.

“Adam Lambert was never banned from the show,” says American Music Awards executive producer Larry Klein emphatically while eyeing a chair on the aisle of row two, audience left (see photo). That’s where the American Idolrunner-up will be seated on Sunday night, just behind Heidi Klum. Lambert will also be presenting an award, marking his first return to the ABC show where he sparked a wave of controversy.

As for the future, Klein very much looks forward to another Lambert performance, but not this year. “Adam Lambert is a friend of ours, he's talented and I like everything about him,” says Klein, “It’s like [AMAs creator] Dick Clark always used to say: ‘I don't care what people do on stage because a stage is for their performance. I care about how people act offstage.’ Adam was performing on a stage. Did he get carried away? Absolutely. Was he regrettful afterwards? Of course he was, but it’s over. ABC never banned him and Dick Clark Productions never would. We’d absolutely have him back.”

That opportunity will come soon enough. On Friday, Lambert tweeted that his long anticipated second album will be titled Trespassing and is slated for release in Spring 2012. He also revealed that a song of the same name appears on the album and was co-written byPharrell Williams.
