Adam Story (From the Last Contest!)

I’m not sure I can call it Adam Lambert inspired or Adam Lambert is my key!

While I would love to say he is my inspiration, I can’t take that route by any means. 

What I will say is he is one of three keys I hold to the amazing relationship I have with my child. I wish I could say that everything is perfect when it comes to parents and their children but I would be lying. I wish I could say that being a single parent was easy but it isn’t and I wish I could say that finding out my son was gay was easy to say but I can’t.  Over these last two years I’ve been working on the relationship I have with my 19 year son.

It was in 2009 when my son and I were on rough roads I was angry at him all the time. I will admit I was not the biggest fan of Adam Lambert or American Idol. My son and I watch him that night singing “Ring of Fire” my favorite Johnny Cash song. I was so sad when I first listened but my son on the other hand was so star struck. I refused to believe anyone could sing that song as good as the great Johnny Cash. What I failed to realize was that everyone is different and this is just who they aspire to be. As the weeks went by I continued to watch in hopes that he would just go away but my son would vote for him. 

Each week the show would come on my son would just sit and gaze at Adam and I would get annoyed. I still couldn’t see the fascination but that was my way of spending time with the one person that meant the world to me. When the season of American Idol came to an end Adam had already grown on me. When Adam Lambert didn’t win in a way I was happy but then I was equally sad. I was happy because very few of the idol winners are heard of after they win and he was something or rather someone my son admired. 

I was happy because I told my son he is gonna be something special just watch. He is gonna change people’s lives and change people’s way of thinking. Little did I know he was my key to the door that unlocked my relationship with my son? He would also be the reason why I changed my way of thinking in a very big way.

I will spare you the anger and frustration of the times that followed and tell you it was March of 2010 when my son graduated from college I was so proud because he wasn’t even 18 years old yet. I wanted so badly to have a connection with him. The day he finished his last class I went to school to pick him up, I was so happy for him I wanted to do something special for him. I told him I would buy him something special anything he wanted. 

To my surprise he didn’t want anything except the new Adam Lambert CD that was released back in November.  I asked him if there was anything else he wanted. He said no he still wanted the CD.  On our way home we opened it to take a listen. To say I wasn’t interested would be a lie. I found myself listening to the songs one at a time and just being fascinated with the words. 

Aftermath was the one song my son and I listened to and figured out we could relate to the words. That was it that was the day he finally came out to me told me he was Gay. He told me everything. 

By the time the 4 hour drive to my house was done I knew my son was gay, he tried to commit suicide and he performed self harm to his body. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. As we listened to the words of the song my son’s words that poured from his mouth just brought tears to my eyes. The anger the frustration, the drugs, the booze, the suicide attempts, the numerous sex partners every little thing that he could say he said. I cried my eyes out for almost an hour .

I remember the day August 1, 2010 we went to Adam's concert that was the day my key worked on the door that locked my son away.  When the concert began let’s just say my evening was one I couldn’t remember much about. What I do remember was the fascinated look in my son’s eyes when Adam stepped out on stage. The look my son had was sure amazement. Right there and then I realized Adam Lambert would be a key that I would hold next to my heart. 

I won’t give the details of the whole concert I won’t bore anyone with what made me become a fan. 

 I will never be able to express the gratitude I have toward Adam for being the glittery key that unlocked the door to my son. I love the idea that Adam has passion for his fans but doesn’t give a crap what others say.  I’ve been asked on several occasions to express why I love Adam Lambert and on all occasions I avoided the question until that one specific time when I got asked what I like about Adam Lambert and Tommy Joe Ratliff this was my answer:

Adam Lambert I must say you sir have the most unique nicknames your fans have to offer. Whether it be ADAM LURKBERT, ADAM GRAMMYBERT, ADAM UNFBERT, ADAM HAWTBERT, ADAM SEXBERT, ADAM CUTEBERT ADAM SWEETBERT or ADAM WATERBERT you sir have managed to be a Trending Topic! With a voice that only an angel can relate to. Looks that even the goddess of beauty would be jealous of here's to you darling for being unique, adorable and fun.

 I will say that each word that was written in Aftermath meant the world to me when my son expressed every little secret he had over the past few years. I will always be grateful for the relationship I have with my son he means the world to me but I will always be grateful to Adam Lambert for giving me the glittery key to unlock that door that led to my son.
